Ensure players are wearing appropriate uniforms and safety equipment prior to games. Referees 7U and up will check and must be allowed to do so prior to the start of the game.
Arrive at games early to warm-up players and communicate plan for the game.
Manage games to ensure each player receives required playing time, and is exposed to different positions throughout the season.
Reserve coaching points to when players come off field or at half-time.
Expect fair and clean play, and respectful behavior from your players.
Display modesty in victory and graciousness in defeat. Congratulate opponents on a game well played regardless of outcome.
Recognize mistakes as learning opportunities, and provide feedback in a calm and encouraging manner to both individuals and the team as a whole.
Accept calls made by referees gracefully.
Uniforms consist of the appropriate club jersey, shorts, socks that completely cover shin guards. Teams will wear blue jerseys for home games, and navy or white jerseys (pennies for 5U-8U) for away games. Goalkeepers must wear a different color than other field players.
Players should wear properly fitting shin guards. Shin guards should cover most of the area between the ankle and knee. They should fit snugly and be at least 2″ below the knee.
Players should wear soccer cleats. On soccer cleats, there is never a single cleat at the very front tip. Soccer cleats typically have two front cleats that are spread apart. Cleats with replaceable studs that are worn, pointed, or have exposed shafts are not permitted and must be rejected upon inspection.
No body jewelry including earrings, rings, belly rings, bracelets, watches, and necklaces should be worn. If it can come off, it should come off. Religious items (jewelry) mandated by a person’s faith may be worn, but only if they are well padded and the referee deems it to be safe. Medical-alert bracelets or necklaces (usually identified as jewelry) may be worn, but only if they are well padded and the referee deems them to be safe. (This must be done in a way that still allows the safety information to be visible.)
No hair pieces, such as barrettes, bobby pins, hair beads and the like.
A player can wear glasses to play soccer as long as the glasses are designated “sport glasses” that are more robust and less likely to be damaged during competitive play. Contact lenses are also acceptable.
Arm casts, hand casts, and finger splints may be permitted if they are sufficiently padded.
A full knee brace is permitted if it is completely padded, usually with materials provided by the manufacturer, and there are no exposed metal parts or sharp edges.
Headgear, for both field players and goalkeepers, is permitted, as long as it is soft and clearly designed for protection.
Mouthguards are permitted, but they must be made of a soft, pliable material. Mouthguards are encouraged for youth with braces on their teeth.
Gloves and undergarments, such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, compression shorts, slide pants, tights or thermal underwear, are permitted as optional equipment. For undergarments for 9U & up, it is recommended that if any portion of these items is exposed (visible; not covered entirely by the mandatory equipment), it should match the corresponding color of the shirt, shorts or socks as indicated above.
Hats or head covers may be worn if there is a need to stay warm. If worn, head covers must: be black or the same main color as jersey, not be attached to the shirt, not be dangerous to the player wearing it (e.g., opening/closing mechanism around the neck), and not have any parts extending out from surface (e.g., bill of a cap).
Soccer’s rules and regulations are maintained and updated annually by the International Football Association Board (IFAB). The board consists of eight members, four of which come from FIFA, and the other four coming from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales – all countries that contributed to the development of the sport.
Generally, the Laws of the Game consist of 17 Laws, noted here, and are used for 9U-19U except where modified. 5U-8U use a simplified set of rules.

The game is 4v4 without goalkeepers using a size 3 ball. Teams play four 8-minute quarters. There are a two minute quarter break, and a five minute half-time between the second and third quarters. At the end of half-time, teams change sides of the field.
Two teams with four players each should be on the field to start the game. A coin toss is conducted with the visiting team calling the toss. The winner of the coin toss chooses which end to defend. The team that lost the coin toss will kick off in the first and second quarters. The teams switch ends of the field at half-time. The team that won the coin toss will kick off in the third and fourth quarters.
The ball is placed in the center of the center circle. The team kicking off may be in the center circle but on their own half of the field. The opposing team must be outside the center circle and on their own half of the field and remain there until the ball is kicked. The kicker can only kick the ball once until touched by someone else.
When the ball completely crosses the goal line, between the goal posts and under the crossbar, a goal has been scored. Restart the game by placing the ball in the center of the center circle and the team who did not score kicks off. Goals may only be scored from the attacking half of the field. No score is allowed direct from the kick off. A goal kick would result if this happens.
No scores are kept or recorded.
The ball must completely cross the touchline before it is not in play. Players are permitted to dribble or pass to re-start the game from the side. The team who did not touch the ball last dribbles/ passes the ball in to put it back into play. Pass/ dribble re-starts are utilized to significantly increase the amount of actions the players have with the ball at their feet. More reps = better players.
When a member of the attacking team (the team trying to score) last touches the ball and the ball crosses the goal line (and is not a goal), the defensive team restarts with a goal kick. The ball is placed anywhere in the goal area and all opposing players retreat to the halfway line. A defensive player dribbles/ passes the ball into play. The ball is in play when it leaves the goal area.
When a member of the defensive team last touches the ball and it crosses the goal line (and is not a goal) the attacking team restarts with a corner kick. The ball is placed in the corner arc. Opponents must stand a reasonable distance away. The kicker can choose to dribble or pass the ball.
Substitutions are allowed at any game stoppage during quarters with referee approval. Substitutions may also be made at quarter breaks and half time. Please keep substitutions to a minimum to not disrupt the game flow.
Anything that seems inappropriate – forearm pushing, kicking someone and not trying for the ball, pulling clothes, handling the ball (hand to the ball, not ball to the hand), pushing with the body, etc. The restart is an indirect free kick (IFK). With IFK, someone must touch the ball before a goal can be scored.
Stop the game and have the coach come out and tend to the player. A dropped ball is used to restart play if play was stopped for an injury, for an inadvertent whistle, or for outside interference.
For 5U/6U games, one coach from each team may be on the field to act as referee and use the games as teaching opportunities for players.
For 7/8U games, referees are introduced. If there is not a referee present, one coach from each team may be on the field to act as referee and use the games as teaching opportunities. All other coaches must remain off the field during the game.
